An Epic Time-Lapse Map of Europe Over the Past 1,000 Years

YouTube user harrunostasj has created a fascinating look at European history in fast forward using the Centennia Historical Atlas. The mapping software is a “dynamic, animated historical atlas including over 9,000 border changes,” tracing the rise and fall of empires from 1,000 C.E. onward. Make sure to watch the video full screen in HD to see the year in the top left corner and notes on historic events in the bottom left corner (and turn up the volume to appreciate the dramatic soundtrack from Inception).

"In your light I learn how to love. In your beauty, how to make poems. You dance inside my chest where no-one sees you, but sometimes I do, and that sight becomes this art."

Forever love this poem.

The thing is, while I like this poem, this is really my favorite part of it. The rest keeps me a little off-kilter, although I like the non-a-b-a-b rhyme scheme - but these last four lines, their sound and the way they swing, to me, is beautiful.

"In the fanciest restaurants, order what sounds least appetizing."

Frugal economist Tyler Cowen, revealing one of his six rules for dining out.

“The logic is simple,” he explains. “At a fancy restaurant, the menu is well thought-out. The kitchen’s time and attention are scarce. An item won’t be on the menu unless there is a good reason for its presence. If it sounds bad, it probably tastes especially good. […] And consider that a few items may be on the menu specifically because they are generally in demand, not because the chef cooks them with special brilliance.”
